Answer:

You can Fix iTunes error 3194 on iOS 5.1.1 Update with 2 ways :

1. Manual Method:

Open your hosts file. On Windows, this would be C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/ and on Mac, you can reach there through Go->Go To Folder->and type /etc.
Once you have the hosts file open, at the end of the file, add this line:
#74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
Once you have appended the file with this line and saved it, restart your device and fire up iTunes for the restore. Hopefully, it would do the job!

2. Software – TinyUmbrella

If you think you are not good at tinkering with the hosts file, there is an alternative. But comparatively, both are same. For this method, you will have to download TinyUmbrella – works for both Windows and Mac. Once you have the software, connect your iPhone through USB. Fire up the software. Make sure iTunes is not open at this point of time.
There should be a Save SHSH button. TinyUmbrella will download SHSH Blobs from Cydia resources.
Now click on Start TSS Server button.
Check the Log tab. If you see ‘TSS Server Started!’ and ‘TSS Accepting Connections’ at the end of the Log, it means the work is done.
Try to open gs.apple.com. If it redirects you to Cydia, it means you are now set to do the custom firmware downgrade or restoration. Launch iTunes and restore to the stock or custom IPSW.

No-go. Mine still gives me the error.
When I enter gs.apple.com in a browser, I end up at Apple, not Cydia, so I know it’s not blocked. Yet I still get the error.
Can’t save blobs with TinyUmbrella… I gat an “unknown build error”. This is an unbroken 3GS on a recent update to iOs 5.1.
This seems to be a regular occurrence with every iPhone I’ve had. A simple update ends up ruining as whole weekend.

I had the same problem with my 3gs updating from 4.3 to 5.1.1 but here’s how to fix it.

    1.
Either follow step 2 download Tiny Umbrella, launch it go to Advance option tab uncheck box “set hosts to cydia….” exit everything restart computer.

Don not run or start server it will not work!. Just do the step above it should fix the problem. Most people said it USB port NO it not USB port it your setting in the HOSTS file.

    2. Edit the hosts file and put a # sign in front of anything read xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx gs.appple save the file, restart computer.

But method 1 should do the trick.

Hey Denis, Im having the same issue, problem is that the box for the set hosts to cydia… option is not lighted up and i cant check or uncheck it. It’s currently unchecked at the moment though. I was just wondering, but it is possible that not having the lastes itunes software plays a part in this error? Cause I cant seem to update my itunes software. Btw, I’m running on a tethered 5.0… iphone software I believe. Please help me, it’s been going on for ages and Im really tired of this. thanks man!

      Hi All..

below is what i see in host file, can anyone tell me where and how should i amend it?

      # For example:
      #
      # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
      # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

      # localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
      # 127.0.0.1 localhost
      # ::1 localhost
      #74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
      #74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
      127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com

I got an iPhone 4S, FW 5.0.1 (9A405), jailbroken with the first version of Absinthe. I no longer have an interest on keeping it jailbroken, but when I tried to update to iOS 6.0, I got the “error 3194″ message.

I tried both methods, neither of them worked.

Can anyone help? I want my FW update…pretty please?

Mate, I have iphone 3gs and i want to update to 5.1.1. After struggling the whole day, what I did to make it work:

    Way to restore:
    - Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts, comment all and add this line: 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
    - Use redsn0w or iREB is change the phone to pwned restore mode.
    - in redsn0w, click on SHSH blobs, click on “verify” and choose the blob corresponding to your ios.
    - Click on “Stitch” to personalize your CUSTOM IPSW with blobs. -> generate new IPSW.
-Use itunes to restore using this generated IPSW
    -Done.
