Google VS Apple 3D Maps – Video

Google VS Apple 3D Maps – Video, Apple announced the 3D Maps at WWDC 2012. Google wasn’t going to sit down and announced 3D Maps of its own. Now both companies have 3D technology in their respective maps application. Google has Google Earth while Apple has Maps in the upcoming iOS 6.

For now, Apple maps app is still in beat mode, while Google has just recently released their Google Earth upgrade. Let’s see which one is looking better up till this point.

Google VS Apple 3D Maps – Video :

The statistics up to this point show that Google Earth features 3D building support for 2 continents, North America, and Europe, for a total of 13 locations.

Europe

  • Rome, Italy

United States

  • Boulder
  • Boston
  • Charlotte
  • Lawrence (Kan.)
  • Long Beach
  • Los Angeles
  • Portland
  • San Diego
  • Santa Cruz
  • Tampa
  • Tucson
  • San Francisco and the Bay Area

As expected, Apple has the lead here. Their maps app has 3D building support for 3 different continents, and a total of 26 locations. That is twice the amount of locations Google Earth has to offer.

United States

  • Atlanta
  • Boston
  • Chicago
  • Dallas
  • Denver
  • Houston
  • Las Vegas
  • Los Angeles
  • Memphis
  • Miami
  • New Orleans
  • Philadelphia
  • Phoenix
  • Portland
  • Sacramento
  • San Diego
  • San Francisco and the Bay Area
  • Seattle

Canada

  • Toronto
  • Montreal

Europe

  • Birmingham, UK
  • Manchester, UK
  • Copenhagen, DK
  • Lyon, France

Australia

  • Sydney
  • Melbourne

Many cities have been excluded from the 3D support. Let’s see a comparison of 3 cities at varying levels of zoom (far, midrange and close). As you will see in the images below, the mapping texture of Google is light as compared to the one used by Apple. For each of the 4 cities tested, Apple has the lead here. Let’s take a look at each city one-by-one starting with Boston. The Google Earth is on the left while Apple Maps are on the right. The cities are Boston, San Diego, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

This shows Apple can easily take out Google, who have been in the game for years. But the fruit company brings innovation. Apple Maps look much better in images above. However, it’s not cached on the device as compared to Google Earth, as when you zoom out of the area, and zoom in later, a large checkerboard of doom is there. This can be due to the high quality. Google Earth is operating smoother at the moment, with no problems in zooming in and out.

Just one point to keep in mind, the Apple maps is still in beta. We expect it to outshine Google Maps when the public version comes out in the iOS 6. What are your thoughts?

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
