How to Update to iOS 5.1.1 – Preserve Baseband for Mac & Windows on iPhone 4, 3GS on iOS 5.1.1 Update.
We have received many comments on our Facebook regarding the way to preserve baseband while upgrading to iOS 5.1.1 for this reason we decided to push this post how to preserve baseband while updating to iOS 5.1.1 in order to keep your unlock
Update to iOS 5.1.1 – Preserve Baseband
How to Upgrade Your iPhone to iOS 5.1.1 Without Updating Your Baseband (Mac & Win)
Required for Update to iOS 5.1.1 – Preserve Baseband :
- Download iTunes 10.6.1
- Download the latest version of Redsnow from
- Download iOS 5.1.1 firmware for your device.
Step 1: After downloading the required Redsnow and iOS 5.1.1 firmware put them into a folder that can be easily identify later.
Step 2: Extract Redsnow by double clicking on Redsnow icon then launch it.
Step 3: After launching Redsnow you will be informed by the screen below then select Extras button from the main menu.
Step 4: Click on Custom IPSW from Extras menu
Step 5: Select your iOS 5.1.1 firmware from your computer and click Open.
Step 6: Now RedSn0w will customize your IPSW file.
Step 7: Once your IPSW has been created RedSn0w will inform you by the message below then Click the OK button.
Step 8: Click Pwned DFU from the Extras menu as you see on the screen below.
Step 9: Turn your device off and connect it to the computer via USB Then click the Next button to continue.
Setp 10: Now you have to put your device in DFU mode by following the steps below as you will see on the screen.
How to Put iPhone in DFU Mode.
- Hold down power button and home button both at the same time for 10 seconds.
- After the 10 seconds release the power button and still pressing on the home button for another 10 seconds.
Step 11: Your device will now be exploited with LimeRa1n.
Step 12: Once its done you will be in Pwned DFU mode.
Step 13: Now Launch iTunes by clicking on it’s icon then select your device from the list on the left, then hold down the Option key and click Restore.
Step 15: Then Select the NO_BB custom IPSW from the folder you saved in and click Open.
Step 16: Your iPhone will now be upgraded to iOS 5.1.1 with preserved Old baseband, and You are done.
Now you can wait for the Upcoming Absinthe 2.0 to Jailbreak your iPhone and to be able to Unlock it with Ultrasn0w or Gevey Ultra S.

Manoj – You have to check with Gevey whether or not it supports iOS 5.1.1 or not. And as far I know, their distributor website mentioned that they support 5.1.1 but you may have to purchase a newer Gevey Sim. check out applenberry.com for more info on that.

I have a question. If baseband is preserved then it can be unlocked by GEVEY ULTRA SIM ( Not S) if have Iphone 4. Everything makes sense except the last statement “Now you can wait for the Upcoming Absinthe 2.0 to Jailbreak your iPhone and to be able to Unlock it with Ultrasn0w or Gevey Ultra S.” where its said to wait. Do we really have to wait and use Gevey Ultra S? Will Gevey Ultra work with IPHONE 4?

as tim said above, you should have put a warning about activation, preserving activation or warning for gevey users. many people including me (and tim) upgraded to 5.1.1 even with preserving baseband are atuck in activation screen. i dont have at&t sim card and dont know what to do.

If you fail , try till you get it.. No need to restart the phone . Just lock it and do it again.
Make sure u activate it once you enter the phone .. If you lock the phone before activation with your gevey .. You will have to do this again .
Hi, thank you for restless effort. I am stuck with iPhone 4 iOS 5.1.1 in Recovery mode,I get exhausted memory as I try to preserve Baseband with Redsn0w 0.9.11b4. Itunes give error 3194 as I try to write firmware.Phone is bricked. I have tried host edit,different PCs and OS. Any help will be appreciated.
Hold down home button and the power button and the phone will restart. I had same problem and it worked again using this method

Great guide!!! The only issue is that the guide states to hold down the “option” key while hitting “Restore”. It does not mention that Windows users should hold down the “shift” key when hitting “Restore”.
Hey guys.. For thoese who stucked at 3194 and like dat errors.. U should take ur ifon into the pwnddfu mode.. If uve done this correctly and ur gettin d 16xx error, thats cuz of ur custom firmware is messed up.. I had d same problem about a week and i couldnt even log into my iphone and i never found d solution but one day i think it may because of my cfw, so i rebuild it and it worked!

Use latest itunes.. Disable all firewalls , or if you have ip faker installed .. Or try a different computer. Or download your original ios again and rebuild it with redsnow .. And make sure you follow all instructions above. You have to put your phone in pwned dfu mode ..
I had the same problem with my ipad 2 , but I didnt need custom ios so I just updated via ipad settings And JB .. But since you are doing a phone and need your old Baseband for unlocks .. Try what I just said. It worked just fine for my iphone 4.
