How to Update to iOS 5.1.1 – Preserve Baseband for Mac & Windows on iPhone 4, 3GS on iOS 5.1.1 Update.
We have received many comments on our Facebook regarding the way to preserve baseband while upgrading to iOS 5.1.1 for this reason we decided to push this post how to preserve baseband while updating to iOS 5.1.1 in order to keep your unlock

How to Upgrade Your iPhone to iOS 5.1.1 Without Updating Your Baseband (Mac & Win)
Required for Update to iOS 5.1.1 – Preserve Baseband :
- Download iTunes 10.6.1
- Download the latest version of Redsnow from
- Download iOS 5.1.1 firmware for your device.
Step 1: After downloading the required Redsnow and iOS 5.1.1 firmware put them into a folder that can be easily identify later.
Step 2: Extract Redsnow by double clicking on Redsnow icon then launch it.
Step 3: After launching Redsnow you will be informed by the screen below then select Extras button from the main menu.
Step 4: Click on Custom IPSW from Extras menu
Step 5: Select your iOS 5.1.1 firmware from your computer and click Open.
Step 6: Now RedSn0w will customize your IPSW file.
Step 7: Once your IPSW has been created RedSn0w will inform you by the message below then Click the OK button.
Step 8: Click Pwned DFU from the Extras menu as you see on the screen below.
Step 9: Turn your device off and connect it to the computer via USB Then click the Next button to continue.
Setp 10: Now you have to put your device in DFU mode by following the steps below as you will see on the screen.
How to Put iPhone in DFU Mode.
- Hold down power button and home button both at the same time for 10 seconds.
- After the 10 seconds release the power button and still pressing on the home button for another 10 seconds.
Step 11: Your device will now be exploited with LimeRa1n.
Step 12: Once its done you will be in Pwned DFU mode.
Step 13: Now Launch iTunes by clicking on it’s icon then select your device from the list on the left, then hold down the Option key and click Restore.
Step 15: Then Select the NO_BB custom IPSW from the folder you saved in and click Open.
Step 16: Your iPhone will now be upgraded to iOS 5.1.1 with preserved Old baseband, and You are done.
Now you can wait for the Upcoming Absinthe 2.0 to Jailbreak your iPhone and to be able to Unlock it with Ultrasn0w or Gevey Ultra S.

I followed every step. It did not work. Now the phone is in restore mode. But itune can not restore with the pawned IPSW. I can not turn off the phone to redo it again. Frustrated.
This is a little confusing because on a Windows computer there is no option key, it is the shift key! hold down the shift key and press restore you will get an browse window to goto the file you need. Also my phone didnt show up immediately after Itunes came uo. I had to click on check for updates then it came up and said this phone needs to be restored and follow the directions from there.

Went back to redsnow. And used fix restore or something cause I was desperate. Somehow the phone came back as before. Then I used the new version of redsnow 0.9.14b. This time I am able to turn off the phone and redid with DFU mode. It ended up with black screen and ready to accept. This time worked!. Updating to 5.1.1 now.
Doesn’t work red-snow wont go to step 6?? Any help?

NO! hold the boutton tha´s above the Ctrl button in the left and clic restore then shose your NO_BB custom IPSW then click open to start restore

I already have a jailbroken & unlocked (with ultrasn0w) iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1. If I use this technique of just preserving the baseband (at 1.59.00) and upgrading to 5.1.1, will if preserve both my jailbreak and unlock?

What is your current modem firmware?
you must jailbreak, in cydia store download ultrasn0w (spelled with a zero. This will fix the no sim card problem. It doesn’t matter if your phone is on AT&T, you need ultrasn0w to fix the problem

Important note for people doing this on a windows pc, where it says hold the “option key” and click restore above. On a PC thats hold “shift” and click restore.
I tried everything but when I open the iTunes, it doesn’t show my iPhone’s name, so cannot get the restore option. what to do???

what to do?? tried many times but same result any one???
Error 3194 cannot be resolved as apple is not signing ios 5.1.1 however u can use ifaith which bypasses this and all other errors so that u can upgrade without any error pop ups however u can upgrade only to ios 5.0.1(using ifaith) not above it.

I´ve tried to upgrade my iphone 3gs following the steps, and i could do everything right until the end, but after restoring with the NO_BB custom IPSW file (that didn´t show any errors) my phone got stuck on restore mode and i can´t do anything. Black screen and no response to anything i tried… help please!
